A major contributor to energy consumption in the home is kitchen and bathroom use. When trying to save on gas and electricity bills the first thing people think of is to cut back on heating and use the lights less. Although these are good ways to save on energy usage there is much more to cutting back the costs of energy.

As mentioned kitchen and bathroom usage often contributes a lot more to energy consumption than people think and there are some basic tips that can be used around these rooms to combat over excessive use:

  1. Use of washing machine – By reducing the water temperature used to wash clothes, energy consumption can be cut by up to 50% over a year. Ensuring full loads are placed in washing machines and tumble dryers will reduce the amount of times these appliances are used and ultimately will cut back on energy used to run these appliances.

2. Oven and hobs – When heating or boiling water for cooking only heat/boil the required amount so that you are not wasting energy to heat water that is not required. Another factor to consider when using a hob is to use the right size hob for the right size pan. For example, if using a small pan use a small hob so that heat energy is not wasted.

3. Water leaks and over use – By fixing any water leaks that appear on shower heads and taps a lot of energy can be saved. Everyone in a household can also look to cut back on how much hot water they use by  having regular showers as opposed to baths and turning off a tap when temporarily not in use, for example, when washing and cleaning teeth.

These are basic tips that take little effort to follow but can help considerably in reducing energy consumption. Further energy saving advice, tools and tips can be found at the sites listed below:
